Radical Beauty, Malibu Rising
The City of Malibu Cultural Arts Commission installed the second edition of Radical Beauty, Malibu Rising, a collaborative community exhibition. A number of artists submitted a variety of paintings, photography, sculptures, short films, written work, poetry, and other art is on display at Malibu City Hall.
The Opening Reception of Radical Beauty, Malibu Rising took place on Friday, September 20 with over 250 people in attendance. The event featured local artists, poets, writers, musicians, and filmmakers. The band, Michelle Wolf & John Watkin: Band of Rouge, opened the reception, followed by comments from Councilmembers Mikke Pierson and Jefferson Wagner, Cultural Arts Commission Chair Veronica Brady and Commissioners Kathy Eldon and Julia Holland. Poet Laureate, Ellen Reich, former Poet Laureate Ricardo Means Ybarra, and Barbara Burke read poems. No Place Like Home, a song written by Reider Larsen who also directed the music video that was previewed during the reception and Robert Kerbeck read an excerpt from his book, Malibu Burning. Other event elements included an interactive listening post and story weave by the Laughing Dog Story Bus, film screenings, and refreshments.
Radical Beauty, Malibu Rising will be on display from September 23 through December 20, 2019 at Malibu City Hall (23825 Stuart Ranch Road). Visitors may attend the exhibition Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Admission is complimentary.
